Western Trip - CA I-5, 99, 395 or ??

And, in the final set of questions - I'm looking at "turning around" at San Luis Obispo and heading back north to the Sacramento area(to set us up for a return to Minn). This will be in August, so don't wish to bake in the desert anymore than we have to. No rush, so again, any advice as to more pleasurable routes - it will all be new to us, with a preference toward "outdoors" and scenic experiences vs. city/town, but we're open to anything. Do wish to avoid really steep pulls up and down, if we can....

  • Our daughter goes to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. We like to travel from Paso Robles over to I5 north to avoid San Jose and the east bay area. Traffic seems to be heavy most of the time through San Jose and towing through that traffic is no fun. We do, however, like the smell of the garlic through Gilroy!

Good advice above...but, having had lots of experience in that area...you will most likely be "baking" in August in the Sacramento - Central Valley area... generally over 100 daily.
    Anyway, have a good trip.
  • 101 north to I-680 to I-80 to Sacramento

If possible try to avoid rush hour beginning below San Jose up past Walnut Creek
Best time through here is Saturday or early Sunday or M-F between 9am and 1:30pm
