I ended up in hospital in Mazatlan this spring for 2 days after food got caught in my throat. The level of treatment was excellent, but you always take a risk in a foreign country. To me it is no reason to stay home, unless of course i can't get any insurance.
I see plenty of seniors retiring to small lakes in remote areas of my home province and wonder what would happen if they had an emergency, in most cases they are hours form a properly equipped hospital. I remember my own granddaughter being in a car accident on a remote logging road, and despite helicopters and everything else it was 3 hours after the accident before she saw an operating table. Canada is huge and the population is small, so hospitals are rare in many areas, you may be better off in Mexico when away from home.
There is something to be said for sticking around urban areas.
