Why use the turnpike?
Less traffic and the poor folks hauling scrap, landscapers, etc won't pay tolls so the turnpike isn't as likely to have a couch or mattress in the road.
Exactly right. And the people on the toll roads just seem to drive a little better too. That's why I take 417 around Orlando. Even though it's longer then taking I-4, my stress level is way less. - ADAD437Explorer

Get a Sun Pass, you'll get a discount on the tolls. And if you already have an EZ Pass, if I remember, Florida Turnpike now accepts EZ Pass.
The last time I was down there, I-95 through Miami was terrible, they used to call it "The worlds longest parking lot". But, it was rough as a cobb with narrow lanes, and crazy drivers. While it seems out of the way stay on the Turnpike through Miami. I would recommend taking the Sawgrass Expressway south at Deerfield Beach, and then go down I-75 til you hit the Turnpike at the Dade/Broward county lines. While the Sawgrass is toll, that route will save you some tolls, and in my opinion, the Sawgrass and I-75 are better roads, with less traffic. The Turnpike through Fort Lauderdale is no picnic. JMHO

If mid day I'll take 95 all the way to Miami and then get on the over priced, was supposed to be free years ago Fla TPike. With 4-5 axles, bend over.
I would not take US1 from Miami as lots of lights and stop-go traffic.
PS: I am a SE Fla native. - samsphonesExplorerWhy use the turnpike?
