8840 question

Hi

we send ours in separate envelopes by regular mail.

We have never had acknowledgement they received them, nor have any other Canadians we know.

At over $1 for postage, both in the same envelope for us.

One envelope, regular mail. No response ever.

They don't respond or confirm receipt. I'd love to see their screen when we go through US Customs to see if the forms have been registered on our file. I would hope they would be.

I doubt it. I don't think the immigration guys talk to the IRS guys. Completely different set of rules and limits.

:) DH figures one envelope, both forms folded together so they are both sure to be removed from the envelope at the same time. I would have folded them separately so that whoever opens it would see there were two distinct forms with different names on them. I think maybe DH's way would be better, though, so one doesn't get left in the envelope, or just use separate envelopes entirely.

I never expected a reply from the IRS, I was thinking registered mail just so I would have proof on my end that it was sent.

Sorry, I just realized I have another question. I had thought if we have no visa (which we don't), Line 1 could be left blank in its entirety. I just came across some info that looks like we would still put in the date we entered the U.S. Thing is, we entered three times during the last calendar year. What do you guys do? Leave it blank? Since you're probably there Jan 1, do you put that date? Or both Jan 1 and the fall date that you re-enter the U.S.?

Yeah correct. On a side note, the immigration arm is actually looking at extending the right to visit up to 8 months.

Yepir. I would think it will happen in the next regime, but the question remains will the IRS still be happy with the declaration on the 8840 as having closer ties to Canada. Not an issue for us as we are not usually in the US for more than 4 or sometimes 5 months at a shot but I suspect those buying houses there will be staying tuned to see how the US deals with them. Once we hit 60 we will probably be snowbirding in other countries (Spain, Italy, Greece, Ecuador, Chile, Mexico etc) and it seems every country has challenges and loopholes to jump through. Yay. :)
