This was our plan before the solar, unfortunately little generators lose what teeth they have at high altitude.
We use our little tiny ultra-quiet (54 dB all the time) Honda EX650 genny primarily for battery charging. Since our battery bank never accepts anywhere near the full capability of what this 550 VA (continuous) generator can provide, it's high altitude power fall off is not an issue.
We camp in an RV with a V10 main engine. This engine idles whisper quiet, so we can top-up the batteries with it's alternator at certain times when very low noise is highest priority - albeit an expensive way to charge at the V10's 0.7 gal per hour consumption rate when idling.
My first choice for ultra-ultra-quiet RV battery maintenance would be a fuel cell. Maybe someday a propane fueled one I can afford will be available for RV use.
