Since when does everyone and their dog require AC for 100deg days? People used to work hard in those temperatures, in fact many still do. If these people just spent some time outdoors getting aclimatized to the local weather and actually moving around (while camping, imagine that!), they would be just fine.
Hmmmm ... try camping - or working for that matter - in 100 deg temperatures when the humidity is high.
We took our longest and most enjoyable RV trip ever (~10 weeks, ~9000 miles) in July-August throughout the Southern and Lower Eastern U.S. some time back. The heat/humidity would have made for insane conditions without an RV that had a generator/air conditioning combination in it when we camped without hookups.
Here's a couple of points:
- If you think people can "get used" to these conditions, then why did we notice that the "locals" on that long trip we made sweating to beat the band under those conditions. There's a difference between "appearing to be used to it" and "wishing you weren't in it". IMHO, there are many places on this Earth where people are living but really wouldn't/shouldn't be - if they had a choice. Air conditioning definitely takes the edge off being in places where we really shouldn't be - for those of us fortunate enough to (temporarily or permanently) have a choice.
- We asked a ranger at one of the old restored Southern Plantations that we visited (durng 90/90 temp/humidity conditions) how the owners of these old plantations stood it during the summer. The ranger responded that the owners weren't around in the summers because they were no dummies - they summered in the Northern U.S. to get out of the heat and humidity of the South! So much for "getting acclimatized to it".
We absolutely wouldn't have an RV without a generator/air conditioning combination so as to be able to have the freedom to stay anywhere anytime - at least temporarily. IMHO, (modern) RV's cost too much to not have a genny/AC included just in case you find yourself winding up in the conditions where they can make a lot of difference.
Yeah But!
We just sold a truck/camper we'd had for almost 10 years. The truck was equipped with AC the camper wasn't for 9 years. We live in the Great Northwest and summers are mild here. We went south in winter when temps were mild there.
Last fall we installed AC in the camper because we were planing a southwestern trip for spring 2013. A week in Phoenix this last May proved the AC's worth.
Staying inside an air conditioned small RV is better than staying in one without it.
But if that's camping I don't like it.
