Above all else we like to camp for the quiet and to listen to nature's sounds and if that means going without the use of the microwave and AC then that is a small price to pay.
I calculated that the cost of a pair of solar panels and an extra battery was about the same as that for generator. With the solar panels the batteries are recharged within a few hours and they work while we are off hiking or fishing or otherwise recreating.
When we do need the AC or want to use the microwave we will check into a campground with hookups so we are not captive to a generator.
On the flip side the campgrounds with hookups are often a lot quieter as people do not run their generators well into the night.
