I have tinnitus and haven't "heard" quiet in 4 decades. In fact, silence is loud to me and more annoying. Droning noise is comforting. It's intermittent loud noises (dogs barking, children yelling, music) that bothers me.
Just offering another perspective. ;)

As a person who has worked the night shift (11pm - 7am) for the last 6 years, I can concur with the sudden loud noise thing. I turn on a ceiling fan that has a slight hum to it and a radio that plays sounds and use them both to sleep during the day. The sudden sounds are what wakes me up and bothers me. I much would rather hear the slight hum of a generator for 2 hours than to hear someone with a diesel truck crank it up to warm it up and feel the need to give it gas for 2 minutes.
