About these City and State Parks in TX and OK

I am looking at some places that have golf next door or within the park. I'll check rvparkreviews.com, but how are these CGs/SPs?:

Texas:
Lady Bird Johnson RV Park in Fredericksburg
Llano River RV Park (city park) in Llano
San Saba River RV Park (city park) in San Saba
Stephen F Austin SP in San Felipe

OK:
Lake Murray State Resort Pk in Ardmore (Lake Texoma)
Lake Texoma State Resort Pk in Kingston

I'm mostly wondering if the parks are nice, roomy, scenic, whatever. If you have info on the golf, I'd like to hear that too. Thanks.

  • I volunteer at Stephen F. Austin SP. The golf course next door is a nice leisurely 1 mile bike ride from the RV loop to the club house. From what I've heard from visitors the course is playing nicely these days. Stately native trees adorned with spanish moss adorn the fairways. Bullinger Creek dissects the course and a few holes have magnificent views of the mighty Brazos River. Also, there are information way markers along the course describing the rich Texas history in the area. It is a semi private course owned and managed by a local family. They bought it from TPWD some years ago.

The park gets a lot of campers who come out just to play golf. There are 40 full hookup, 30 AMP pull through RV sites. I nice quiet park.

The course at Bastrop SP is closed. They'll be looking for someone to take over.
  • Yeah, I missed Bastrop. The campground is nice enough but the golf course is hard as a rock and all the greens are like overturned saucers. However Pine Forest GC is a 5-10 minute drive away and is a knockout course. Best hole is a 145 yard par 3 where you tee off on a cliff 100' above the green.

+1 on Lady Bird. Beautiful municipal park (some sites can be close, however; check your site before you accept it) and a really fun golf course which was just renovated recently. And you can't find a neater little town than Fredericksburg.

SFA is a nice state park with good trails for biking and hiking, some near a river. Haven't played the golf course but it looked pretty from the road. Not much else to do, as there's really no town there.

Bastrop State Park also has a course - a very old one built in the CCC days. Love the park, but haven't played the course. There's another course nearby that is beautiful, however (Pine Forest).

We stayed at Lockhart SP once, and I golfed their course. It was pretty low end, rough, and did not get much business. The guy I golfed with said the Bastrop course was the same way.
  • Thanks folks. Keep em coming.

I guess I need to mention that I plan to get to the courses by bicycle! I have a hitch on the bike, and tow a golf push cart backwards (on two wheels). It's an ebike so I can go a fair distance without it being much trouble. BUT, if I have to ride on public roads with heavy traffic to get to any of those courses, please let me know. I want to avoid that. That will make a difference to me as far as where to go.

Crossing a highway should be ok, though.

BTW for the benefit of future readers of this thread, this website was my starting point:
    Texas CGs with Golf Courses

I figured out that some of them are just stay and play deals, and the course is 10 miles away.

The RV park is OK depending on your campsite. You do not want one of the back to back ones that are in the middle. The golf course is excellent and is a 2 minute drive from the RV park.

Llano River RV Park (city park) in Llano
San Saba River RV Park (city park) in San Saba

Stephen F Austin SP in San Felipe
SFA SP campground is shady and very easy to maneuver around in. Nice hiking trails. The golf course is usually in average condition for a state park course but is especially pretty in the spring.

    OK:
Lake Murray State Resort Pk in Ardmore (Lake Texoma)
One of the best I've been to regarding the campground. Try to get into Elephant Rock because it's full hookup and a very short drive to the course. The golf course is outstanding. Lots of elevation changes and interesting water hazards. Hardly ever crowded

Lake Texoma State Resort Pk in Kingston
The campground is nothing special and the golf course at the park has closed, however just down the road is Chickasaw Pointe that is a terrific course but pricy.

I'm mostly wondering if the parks are nice, roomy, scenic, whatever. If you have info on the golf, I'd like to hear that too. Thanks.

If you check my signature photolink I'm pretty sure I have photo albums of the places I mentioned.

  • Lady Bird is good and the golf course is good, too. Fredericksburg is a great town to visit, fun shopping, Nimitz Museum (great museum, takes some time), great wineries, if you are interested. Friends who have a big rig really like Stephen F. Austin. Not sure about the golf.
  • I don't know anything about golf but we liked San Saba River RV Park.
