Acadia National Park

This park looks beautiful! We were planning on going out west for our 2 week trip but we were out there last year and I was just looking at other areas of this country and started to look at the Northeast. Acadia and the White Mountains of New Hampshire look very Beautiful. I would love to hear comments from people that have been in this area. any info would be appreciated. Thanks Tara

You can't go wrong with Acadia at all. Absolutely beautiful, and plenty to do. As far as the White Mountains, check out the Kancamagus Highway (http://www.kancamagushighway.com/). You can body surf on the river over granite rocks, it's a blast.

There's a lot to see in that whole region if you love the outdoors. Have fun researching.
  • Acadia is my favorite park in the eastern US. Lakes, mountains, and the ocean all in one place. If you're into biking, there are miles and miles of carriage roads that were built around 80 to 100 years ago. One can rent bikes out of Bar Harbor and ride through miles of scenery. Wide, not technical, and no car traffic. We saw quite young children on some of the trails. Take a picnic lunch. Plenty of hiking trails, too.

An interesting road through the White Mountains is the Kancamagus Hwy. Road guide here. Interesting hikes along this road. Some scenic NFS CG's also.

Since it's a fair distance from Indiana to Acadia, I'd pick a route that stays away from the major cities (and traffic). One can get hung up in some monstrous traffic jams at the wrong time of day.
  • My 87 year old pop lives about 30 minutes from Acadia, and about 1/4 mile from a lobster pound. Last summer, we bought 2 pound lobsters for $3 apiece. It pays to have a friend who owns the place.

We love Acadia and visit every time we're in Maine to see my dad.
  • The White mountains of NH are one of the prettiest places in the country. We stayed at the Twin Mountain KOA. Was a good location for us. We did 10 nights at Acadia also and then went all the way to Eastport. Lake Placid is also pretty cool.
  • We spent a week there several years back. Really enjoyed it, and it is very pretty! Did a lot of hiking and a few bike trails. Even better is the Lobster Pounds in the area. Fresh Lobster = yum!!
  • Acadia is an unusual park. It is split into different sections surrounded by non-park land. There are also a number of Islands you can take ferries to. The Schoodic section north of Bar Harbor is the most impressive and what you usually see in photographs with the very rugged coastline. I didn't find the Bar harbor section of Acadia all that impressive. There are of course all those picturesque small coastal towns to see too.

We stayed at the Bar harbor KOA which was a good spot. They would deliver lobsters to your site.
  • Do you mean Acadia National Park. No "r" in there. A great place for sure. We enjoyed it a few years back.
