Adirondack Camping Trip

Hubby and I will be spending a few days in the Adirondacks. We're making reservations at Ledgeview RV Park in Lake George, NY, for shopping and sightseeing in that area.

Has anyone visited Natural Stone Bridge and Caves in Pottersville, NY? Is it worth the price for the visit? Do you actually get to go into caves?

What else can you suggest for must-sees in this area? We like scenic drives, nice hikes, waterfalls etc...

Next, we'll be moving up to the Lake Placid area for a few nights. We haven't decided where to stay in this area - suggestions welcome. We want to go to High Falls Gorge and The Six Nations Indian Museum... Will probably take a gondola ride up Whiteface Mountain too.

Again, what should we not miss? Scenic drives, hikes, waterfalls, covered bridges etc...

Thanks for your input!

  • any site number suggestions for the rv parks mentioned on lake george? are they decent sites?
  • X2 We have stayed at the North Pole Resorts in Wilmington - - - The 100 Acre Wood side with 50A and pull-through sites.
  • We stay at North Pole Resorts in Wilmington when we go to Lake Placid. The 100 Acre Wood side is the newer addition with 50A and pull-through sites.

For hiking there's the Flume Trail where the Ausable river crosses Rt 86. Further south on Rt 73 gets you into the High Peaks area for more strenuous hikes. An easy climb in Lake Placid is Cobble Hill, the trailhead is off Mirror Lake Drive.

DW likes shopping in Placid, but you'll find me at Steak and Seafood having a microbrew.

The boat cruise around Lake Placid is something you should do once.

Parking in Placid can be a real pain, good luck. But there's a trolly that runs around town if you have to park far away.

Come up and visit Ausable Chasm in the NY Adirondacks where our seasonal site is. There's lots to do for the kids. The campground has some 50-amp sites and wifi. From here you can take the ferry to Burlington (Vt) for a day trip and visit there also.

  • The Olympic venues in Lake Placid are worth a look. Just to see that rink where the "Miracle on Ice" took place during the 1980's games is neat. You can also take a ride to the top of the ski jumping tower and also a bob sled ride.
  • We will be at Lake George RV Park for one week beginning this Saturday which is right down the road from Ledgeview.

Never been to Natural Stone Bridge and Caves, but there are many other things to do in the Lake George area. If you are looking for place to drive and hike, you need to check out Prospect Mountain which overlooks Lake George. If you want to take a scenic drive take Route 149 east into Vermont. There are some really beautiful areas of Vermont not very far from the campground.
