Alabama Hills, Lone Pine CA

It was 30F one morning in late March in the AH but did warm up as bpounds said.

It's a great place to land and then taking your tow vehicle or toad for a day trip to Death Valley.

Its on our list for this winters trip. Might spend Christmas there.

^ +1. As long as your rig can handle low night temps. It always warms up during the day. Should not be a problem for most.

I personally would avoid July thru mid September. It is high desert and gets hot. I am uncoordinated and cannot sweat and sleep at the same time.

You can go in January -- sometimes there is a little snow. It is around 4000 feet. Temps at night are often in the 20s. We camped north of Bishop in the volcanic table lands in mid-December, about 60 miles north of the Alabama Hills.

Can you go in January what is the altitude?

Alabama Hills is an awesome boondocking spot. We love it!

Maybe 5 years, I'd have to check my files to be sure. It was definitely blowing from DVNP since that's where we came from. There was some fellow playing a (player) piano out of the back of his p/u. Had a his dog with him and apparently toured the country. And it was blowing hard with dust up there. That was on that high spot overlooking the Sierras. A memorial to some priest there.



Tho it doesn't look that way in the photo. It was 2012 obviously.

How long ago was that?

Reason I ask, is that the Owens (Dry) Lake is just south of town, and has been an ongoing court battle over the particulates that get whipped up into the air. Causing, possibly, lung cancer among the folks who live there. Somewhere around 10 years ago the courts demanded that the LADWP do something, and they now keep the lake bed watered to reduce the dust. They are not refilling the lake. It is still a dry lake, but they build levees and alternate water flow to areas to keep the entire lake bed in various states of mud. If you were there more than a decade ago, chances are the dust was coming from the Owens Lake, but the wind would be coming from Death Valley too.

What the area has plenty of, is wind.

What I noticed from you pictures is that there is no graffiti on the rocks...that's refreshing.

There is a group that works hard to keep that, and other damage under control. People making new roads is a constant battle that they fight. Lately they have been replanting areas and building borders out of stones, which there is no shortage of.
