Ambassador Bridge(2013)

Has anyone recently crossed to the USA using the Windsor-Detroit bridge.

We are heading to Florida(from London, ON) next week and would appreciate an update.

My R-McN GPS routing over to I-75S via the tunnel.
I would prefer the bridge because it had easier access to I-75S

I have a 30' 5th wheel.

Thx
  • I concur with bobmacc's comments about the clearances and the "jog" required to get to the toll booth, we were fortunate there was virtually no other traffic when we crossed so it wasn't that bad. We cross at Detroit, we tried Port Huron a couple of times, easier but going through Detroit is a bigger hassle than the Ambassador bridge, one year we had a shovel of cold patch asphalt thrown at a pothole in front of our TV by a maintenance guy, we served as the roller!

One thing that the border guy did this year was different, he opened the slides partially to have a detailed look around, must be a new thing. He had us move forward so that the slide could be opened without hitting anything. I did a double check after he finished to make sure that everything was put back properly for travel.
  • Cross in Port Huron via the Blue Water Bridge. I'd swim befor I would cross on the Ambassador Bridge. I'll leave it as an opinion because my reasons would be deleted by a mod, if I stated them.
  • We crossed over at the Ambassador in early October. As others have mentioned, the construction is complete. We have a 40ft DP and tow an HHR so are close to 60 feet in length. When we have crossed before (many times)but we have been directed to the right hand side to use the truck facilities.
On the day we crossed last month, they were not busy and we were directed by the attendant to regular vehicle area and the "RV" lane there. This lane is located on the right hand side of and immediately adjacent to their new building. We proceeded through only to find that they have recently added a permanent building/canopy to the secondary inspection area just past the primary inspection booth. Since there is likely less than 6" clearance on either side going through the booth, a hard right hand turn to avoid the building must be made once the RV has passed the booth to avoid it particularly if you are in the first lane designated for RVs. Next you must head for a toll booth and get aligned to avoid the formidable curbs protecting the toll lane. Not an easy task. The Border agent could not understand why the RV lane was not relocated and recognized the difficulty reaching the toll booths when exiting.
Fortunately, it was not busy however I had to proceed slowly to access the toll lanes that took cash (on the extreme right) and in the process obstructed other traffic who were patient and appeared to understand my predicament.
I suggest you check the satellite views in Google Maps which have a fairly recent picture of the facility showing the canopy. It is easy to visualize the distance you have as you can see several nearby tractor trailers for length reference. You can also place the street view icon on the blue line past the booths to see it precisely.

  • The construction on the Ambassador Bridge has been completed for well over a year now....easy access now from the Bridge to I-75 south...enjoy your trip!
  • We go to Florida from London via Port Huron. Easy access through customs and easy onto I-75 in Detroit. Just watch the signs.
  • We crossed there on Saturday AM (early). No problem construction is pretty much done. Watch the signs to 75S. If you are dragging a trailer you have to keep to the right side of the building or they may want you to go with the trucks. If you go to the left where most of the 4 wheeler go you will need ear plugs. Been there done that.

    Happy motorin!
  • If it were me I'd take the 402 across to Sarnia, cross over the Blue Water Bridge, then take I-94 to I-75 S. From London this is only 5 miles further than the Ambassador Bridge but will have allot less truck traffic.
  • As far as I know it's all open with no construction. Southbound I-75 has had a few single lane closure off and on in Monroe County, MI but not slowing down traffic much. The center lane is the smoothest to travel in all the way to the Ohio line.
