  • The one in Story City - Whispering Oaks. It's a nice campground. Water/Electric on most of the sites. Some have full hookups. This is about 10 minutes from Ames depending on which side of town you are trying to get to since you can go I-35 or US69.

Ledges State Park, is WEST of Ames near Boone (not east as another poster noted). It's about 20 miles and overall nice state park and easy to get to on US 30.

Twin Anchors in Colo has a lot of permanent residents, but do have some sites for overnights. Overall not bad condition. It's about 20 miles EAST of Ames on Hwy 30.

Some other options are Briggs Woods on Hwy 17 near Webster City (about 25 miles from Ames), and Little Wall Lake on Hwy 69 about 25 miles north of Ames on US 69. Both of these are very nice county parks and reasonable cost for full hookups (or water/electric).
  • North of Ames (Ia) one on Story City (private)
East of town, Ledges State Park
West of town, Twin Anchors (Colo - private)

Haven't been in any of them for quite a while.

As a preliminary, we start by using the cg search feature at Woodalls.com
Just type in your destination and select your options. Then we call the cg for specifics if it's not at their website.
