Have stayed several times with 2 dogs and 1 cat, never payed for extra for them, and they seen them and actually have commented about them at check in. The price on the front end looks high, but if you stay somewhere else, it can actually cost more when you include all the extras you will have to pay for staying elsewhere. There are perks for staying on park, early entry in parks, stay after hours in parks, programs and activities in Fort Wilderness, Free transportation to all of Disney properties, etc..
