Don't really know why someone would call it armpit of Texas. To each his own I guess.
We always stay at Ft Amarillo RV Resort at the west edge of Amarillo. Nice park convenient to many restaurants and shopping. But if you let the DW in the gift shop it may cost you more than the site itself.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park is definitely worth a visit. And a great place to stay if you prefer to stay in a beautiful state park. And the plains museum in Canyon near the park entrance is worth a visit. All this is a fairly short drive to/from Amarillo.
