Are leaves changing colors now in the Blue Ridge, VA area?

Would like to leave Florida in a week and head towards the NC area, Blue ridge Mts but no further than Virginia. Lets say travel that area on October 7 to October 18. Would it be worth it? Will the leaves change by then?

  • Here is a pic of the Blue Ridge Parkway on September 29 to give you a visual of what is happening now. This is around Grandfather Mountain in NC, so it's pretty far up in the mountains.

  • i think we are two weeks to three weeks away still. I live at the top of the Skyline Drive or the entrance on the northern most point.
  • They are just starting to turn.
Your time frame should be right on !

  • I'm on the other end of the state from nomad297 and we are just beginning to turn. Some of the trees are beginning to yellow a bit, but we are still mostly green. It is supposed to be cool this weekend with daytime highs in the low 60s and nighttime lows in the high 30s, so that should bring on some color changes. Two weeks will probably be the best time for us.
  • Yep. In the higher elevations they should be changing in a couple weeks. the recent cool weather is helping them along
  • Barely starting, Should be at or near peak 2nd-3rd week in October. in the Virginia BRP Areas
  • It's only just starting. I would guess that in two weeks it will start to look really good.

  • Was just in Bryson City, NC and Cherokee, last two weekends, and there are some trees changing (higher up Mtns), so further North, I would say yes. Still not widespread, but colors are changing.
