Assategue SP

Looking at going to Assategue this year. The web site doesn't have a lot of information (why can't government agencies find a decent web site designer?).

I'm looking for the rules relating to generator use, quiet times etc. I assume it's typical quiet times of 10pm or so.

Also, we're planning on early October. I'm guessing we won't need the A/Cat night. Is this a reasonable assumption?

  • Don't confuse the SP with the National Seashore. They are side by side.

The SP looks very barren, being between the road & the beach. The National Seashore has a beachside area too. Dry camping. Paved sites. More spread out than the SP. The bayside loops have trees & are also paved. Been there a number of times late Sep/early Oct. Never had a bug problem. Nights plenty coo enough without A/C.
  • From the FAQ at the Park website's "Camping at Assateague" page:
    Are generators allowed?

Generator use is prohibited during quiet hours 10 pm- 7 am. Outside of quiet hours, generators must be operated at a sound level that is not annoying or disturbing to other park users. You may be asked to turn a generator off or limit use based on sound levels. Failure to comply may result in a citation. (COMAR 08.07.06.20)

Another potentially important point - the $10 Maryland Lifetime Senior Pass is offered to out-of-state residents, too. Good for half-price camping Sunday - Thursday, as well as day use admission to Maryland State Parks.
  • The bay side can have a LOT of ferocious mosquitoes if the breeze is light or non-blowing. Also, getting reservations in the SP can be hard so start early. Also watch out for the ponies. THey're fun to watch but are totally habituated to people. I've seen them steal $30 worth of picnic food from a bag in the front seat of a car (doors closed windows open) in about 10 seconds while the driver was selecting the key for his camper. THe ponies don't chase easily and they bite and kick.

The park is a great place to go and should not be missed.
  • Not sure about the state park and generators.I know they have one loop with electric. The National Park Bayside Campground has 3 loops,2 of which allow generator use during certain hours. We liked the Bayside better because there are a few trees and some grass.
