Baxter SP

Good question , there is also a 7' width restriction and a 22' length . Almost seems aimed at TC's . The " rules " state that a special permit MAY be issued by the director .

Tx Bob...yeah I am going to call and see what the special permit is all about...

FYI; called up to Baxter...the "special use permit" is to allow maintenance vehicles etc, to enter park. Private vehicles must meet size restriction. Looks like we'll be tenting for this one.

That is one limiting State Park.

Besides the vehicle restriction, no animals (obviously aimed at dogs) is the most glaring. Otherwise the list of rules may be one of the longest I have seen.

Is it that popular that this is needed?

I noticed that a reservation is needed to PARK for day use as well, with Maine residents getting priority.

x2 Bill. Baxter is geared for tents. Check the dog rule too .

Yes...well aware of all the regs, just wanted to know if anyone has tried to get a TC in.
Baxter is a very special place. Part of the Mission Statement reads; "shall forever be kept and remain in the natural wild state…shall forever be kept and remain as a sanctuary for beasts and birds”.

If you want to see Moose...you WILL see Moose in Baxter. Bears? Last time I was there a mother and Cubs walked by our tent EVERY evening.

Baxter is a cool place...but they do somewhat limit access to keep it wild.
Climbing Katahdin, and walking the Knife Edge, is quite an experience.

I remember going to Baxter in the 1960's with my parents. We drove all that way from Buffalo to discover they don't allow dogs. My Dad was pretty upset. We still had a great trip exploring other places.

After all these years with TCs and TTs, it would take a bomb blast to get my Cathy into a tent again.

Yeah...I still end up in a tent for quite a few nights each year. Between Scouts and my backpacking addiction it can't be avoided! I do spoil myself with a nice Big Agnes q-core sl air pad (~ 1#!) to sleep on...but given a choice I'd take the TC any day!
Oh well...anything to get outdoors!
