Once again thanks for all of the input on this subject. I found it very valuable.
What I think I'm going to do is attempt to secure the place with camera's and give neighbors the ability to view the camera's (if they want) and also the ability to check on the place if something is amiss.
I am just so impress with what my simple (and cheap) prototype pan/tilt camera can do. Below are two example of what I've done with the night vision turned on. If I leave the light on, then it's close to HD quality.
I can now check on the place anywhere in the world. I think I'll be more proactive vs reactive this way. Side benefit is anytime I want I can see that everything is OK and a sensor didn't fail on me.
The camera came from Foscam. via Amazon for under $60.
