We haven't been to Maine in many years, but were thinking of traveling up to Bar Harbor in July. Would it be too busy and/or hot and crowded? We would call for a reservation of course.
The first 2 weeks in August are the most crowded in Maine, so you should be ok in July. We were in Wells the first 2 weeks of August last year and it was a madhouse. This year we will be going at the end of August thru September. No crowds, no kids and plenty of Maine seafood.
We like the KOA in Bar Harbor - they have some sites right on the water that are nice. There's a man who cooks lobster dinners and chowder at the campground - reasonable prices and delicious.
We were there last July and it was nice weather and not too crowded in the park.
We were there for 2 weeks 2 years ago in July. It was 95 degrees and sunny. Very odd weather for New England especially in Maine. We had packed our sweat shirts and long pants for evenings around the campfire but instead sat in tank tops and shirts in the A/C of the RV! Had to cut some of our hiking trips short and just spent more time at the beach. So with New England you can never predict the weather. Crowds are not too bad. The free bus is great to get around. When you get there just pick up a cruise ship schedule and avoid downtown Bar Harbor the days the ships dock. Down town get very crowded then during the afternoons when all the passengers come ashore.
Ahhh...somewhere else to add to our list. I owe my wife a lobster dinner in Maine. It's a funny story. We lived up in Massachusetts for a year. My parents came up to visit and we went out for a ride one day. Made it up to Maine and turned around. My parents wanted to buy us dinner and I don't like anyone spending a lot of money on me for food, so I guided them back down to New Hampshire to a cheaper place. My wife was upset because we went to Maine and didn't have lobster...lol
We love Acadia NP. Only use the CG's there. Blackwoods often fills - you might be able to get a reservation. Seawall, in the "quiet" corner of the park, offers a few reservable sites, but most are non-reservable, 1st-come sites. See http://www.nps.gov/acad/planyourvisit/placestogo.htm#CP_JUMP_427049 Weather should be fine then. The NP CG's are dry-camping only, but there is a dump station. ST
We were there last year around the 4th of July. Wasn't overly hot at all. Went on a boat ride and it was pleasantly cool even. Did have some rain one day. Didn't seem extremely crowded either, even in town. No lines for shuttles, no wait at a restaurant right on the green in town.
