Benson AZ to Austin TX

Hello everyone,

I am heading from Benson AZ to Austin TX. I would like to do the trip in 3 to 4 days of driving and not planning on stopping or seeing anything along the way.

I would like to get some suggestions for staying the night along the way. I am open to rv parks, boon docking, truck stops or wally docking as long as they are safe places to stay. I have a 45 foot coach.

Would anyone have some suggestions. I would like to drive between 250 to 350 miles per day. I can drive further if needed.

Thanks in advance,

Stuart
  • Places we have stayed this route all are full hook up parks. Hacienda Las Cruces, the KOA in Van Horn, the old KOA just south of town Fort Stockton,KOA, Junction,Fredericksburg RV Park. Have fun
  • Hi everyone,

Our trip went very well. The first night we stayed at the Sunland Park Casino & Ractrack just outside of El Paso, TX. Great place for a stop over. They had 8 RV sites with water and electric for $15 or you could dry camp for free. We opted to go for the electric.

The second night we had a awesome situation. We got a really early start and ended up driving farther than we expected. We felt we could get to Fredericksburg, TX, 506 miles. We are members of Harvest Hosts and there happen to be a winery there. Called and they said they had room and we could fit, 45 foot monster here.

We got there after they closed and when we were about to turn into the winery the road looked way to narrow and had fences that looked to close to navigate. We decided to head to the center of town and figure out another place to stay. We pulled off to the side of the road in the center of town. Everything was closed so it did not matter that we were taking up a bunch of parking spots. We pulled out the gps and found a few possibilities, a Walmart, a KOA.

Just as we were deciding to head to the Walmart and elderly gentleman knocks on our front door. FYI, we are from Vermont, we open the door and he says "hi I am from New Hampshire and also an Rver, you look like your are lost and looking for a place to stay". We said that is correct. He then graciously offered for us to stay in his driveway that is 100 ft long with full rv hookups. I asked how much he would charge for the night and he said "I would not charge you anything, would just love to have you stay over".

Well, this RV lifestyle is filled with amazing people. You never know if he is a really nice guy or some king of wacko so we decided to drive over to his house and if we felt uncomfortable we would just continue on our way. As it turned out he lives in a beautiful subdivision in a beautiful large house. His wife was waiting in the driveway to greet us. We pulled in and spent the evening talking and enjoying each others company.

What a fun evening and now we have new friends in a place we will certainly come back to.

  • From Benson to El Paso is a decent drive. We usually stay at the Flying J at exit O, Anthony, TX, but there are other options nearby. A mile south is the TX Welcome Center with good parking. Across the interstate is Camping World.
Down the road, we like staying at the Walmart in Ft. Stockton.
Or, we like Balmorhea State Park. If you get there before sundown, you can watch the flight of the bats as they come out of the tiles on the campground shelters. Kinda cool :)
Another place we like is the rest stop that is 8 miles west of Sonora. A nice shady stop, pull in and park along the back half circle.
If you're ready to stop at Fredericksburg, there are several rv parks.
Another nice rv park is south of Johnson City just where 290 turns to the west toward Austin.
