Bent Mountain Virginia

Does anyone know of a CG near Bent Mountain Virginia?

  • The campground at Roanoke Mountain on the Blue Ridge Parkway has been permanently closed and the area is being converted to day use only. At one time Dixie Caverns was on the market to be sold. It always had pretty lousy reviews too. Sorry but there just are not many camprounds around there.
  • We live at the foot of Bent Mountain off 221. Dixie caverns is probably closest but not where I would stay. I would recommend smith mountain lake stare park or lakeridge Rv resort in hillsville . Lakeridge is a nice campground and probably your best bet.
  • Meadows of Dan C G mp 177 on BRPKY open year round cross rd of 58 and pkwy right on the side.
  • Closer than Dixie Caverns campground, but still not "close" (about 20 miles, 30 minutes from the main stretch on Bent Mountain) is one of our favorite campgrounds, Camp Alta Mons.

It is a relatively rustic campground; we prefer the sites on the South Fork of the Roanoke River that have water and electric connections but no sewer. The bathroom and showers are in the part of the campground that is across the state road and several hundred yards away. The "river" at this point is just a large creek most of the time, but it is very peaceful.

Be warned that you will literally be driving from near the top of the mountain "down into the holler" though, on a narrow, crooked road. If you have access to a car or pickup this is no problem, but I would not want to make this trip twice daily with a big ol' Class C coach!

Bent Mountain is a beautiful area with lots to see. We hope you get to visit and enjoy your stay!
  • Of course we will do the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Hubby has been there. This trip is going to be a big step for me and I am getting excited.

We will make sure they are home. She is in the medical field and could be on call.

We have friends that live on the mountain, 25 acres. We have never been so we thought it might be nice to surprise them and also be our first time camping in the US. I know they have lots of room but it would hardly be a surprise if we stayed there.

Surprises are great, but don't get surprised yourselves. They may not be home. :E
Be sure to drive some if not all of the Blue Ridge Pkwy.

  • Beautiful country, but I believe the nearest fhu campground is going to be the campground at Dixie Caverns. There is a campground on the Blue Ridge Pwk near Roanoke if it's open.
