Besides Niagara Falls & NYC.....

What else is worth seeing / doing in east to west central New York. Here is the deal, this September will be leaving southern Maine & heading to Niagara Falls for a day or two. Then meandering back.

All hints & recommendations are appreciated.

Cheers, Bob
  • A few of my favorite places in NY. Letchworth and/or Watkins Glen SP for the hiking, falls, and scenery. Wine tours around Seneca Lake for that matter. Alexandria Bay should be beautiful that time of year. There are a few cave sites to explore around Herkimer. Old Forge and Lake George areas are a little touristy, but have some nice scenery, hiking, and history. I have yet to stay at a DEC camp that wasn't gorgeous, but they are all dry camping, no hookups. Of those,Cranberry Lake is our fav. A lot of other good suggestions in here, anything you like to do or are interested in?
  • 2X on Letchworth State Park. Three large waterfalls, many hiking opportunities, even the possibility of balloon rides. There is a large campground with many loops in the park (electric only).
  • The vineyards around Lake Seneca & Watkins Glen SP and the Glen itself. Worth a visit.
  • We spent a good hour at the Falls. We also took a boat ride on the Erie Canal out of Lockport, NY. `low bridge everybody down...' Yes, that Erie Canal.
  • The Erie Canal is quite interesting. There's a historical center and newly-restored section of locks at Lockport, not far from Niagara. You can ride a boat on the canal, walk the tow paths, etc. quite a few wineries to tour in that area, too.
  • The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY is well worth a visit. Check the NY State Park website, too, perhaps cross-checking with the RV Park Reviews website.
  • New York is a rather large and varied state. A few things that haven't been mentioned so far:

Ausable Chasm might be worth checking out. The optional raft bit is said to be somewhat of a let down.

The Corning Museum of Glass is well worth visiting.

If you like amusement parks, Seabreeze in Rochester is a nice little family-owned affair with a few rather notable rides: the hand-carved wooden carousel (about twenty years old, built in the traditional manner to replace an antique one that burned); the Jack Rabbit roller coaster (one of the oldest operating ones in the world), and the Bobsleds ride (largely built in-house, a tubular steel coaster type ride on a wooden structure).

High Falls in Rochester is a pleasant area to stretch one's legs, and impressive enough to be a bit of a warm-up for Niagra Falls.
  • Finger Lakes and some of our beautiful state parks, like Letchworth, voted most beautiful State park in the country. If you have kids stop at the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester. Genesee Country Museum is also a great historical recreation using actual buildings from the area.
  • The Adirondacks. Lake Placid is worth a visit, and there is plenty of beautiful scenery in the vicinity. Some decent CGs near there too.
