We're planning our first big camping trip and are leaning toward Myrtle Beach. We've heard great things about Pirateland. Any thoughts or suggestions vs. Lakewood or any others nearby?
Wouldn't mind hearing from any of you on your suggestions for other waterfront parks on the east coast.
Thanks!!
What are you looking for?
Paved pads or dirt pads?
Golf cart rentals or not?
Other amenities?
Location? North or south?
Price point ? Not much difference between the commercial parks the state park will be around half price, but lacking in amenities.
We've stayed at Lakewood and ocean lakes. Prefer ocean lakes with its paved pads and we have a golf cart that we like to use. Some will complain about how big or busy it is. But it's the largest rv park on the east coast. Lakewood is ok. But dirt pads and you are backed in to the camper behind you. Ocean lakes pads are pull through. Lakewood does have the new water slide though. Haven't been to Pirateland. Have only seen it from Lakewood and we didn't care for its look. Drove through Apache and it was run down and nothing but dirt. Drove through myrtle beach travel park and it's better than apache and where we would stay if we wanted to be on the north side and didn't take a golf cart. But the pads/roads are dirt and the sites closest to the beach flood.
Wow! People camping on dirt. Who would have thought. :B
Seriously though. Camping on cement at the beach. Is OK. If you don't like sand. But it is 10 to 15 degrees HOTTER than camping on the sand. That's why we prefer dirt / sand, sites. Plus the picnic shelters are great.
We have stayed in all of the beach front CGs, They all have their pros, and cons. We have friends that won't go anywhere but OL. But they take a Golf cart, and like to ride all night. Got mad when we told them PL allows no carts out after 11. Which is one of the reasons we like it.
OL does have great bath houses, as does MBTP, but the sites are much smaller than PL. OL also has a nice HB stand, and great store.
MBTP does have large sites, but the South end front row sites do flood. And Apache is very dated, has smaller sites, but has the largest Beach of any of the MB CGs, and a pier. However the pier is walking distance from MBTP.
PL, and MBTP both have a deserted beach to their North, with great shells, and that beachcomber feel.
As for Lake wood. It does have large sites. But like OL has no picnic shelters, but good stores, and most of the bath houses are very dated. It's nice. But for some reason we don't really care for it.
So you see. they all have their pros, and cons. Its all in what you want.
Here ya go fibbing. Ocean lakes does not allow you to ride your golf cart all night long. Ocean lakes sites are no smaller than anyone else's. It has some small sites and it has large site. The last site we had, although not paved (for those who prefer no cement), we had enough room to park our 32' class c on one end, and our utility trailer on the other end. Our SUV and golf cart could easily fit between the two of them with our awning out. The good thing about ocean lakes is that you reserve a specific site online. Not just an area or type of site. You pick the site you want to be on. Their website will give you the dimensions of the site, if there are any obstructions (trees/poles) , how far you are from the beach and how far you are from a bath house. And all bath houses have been updated recently there.
According to Rick they do. And when we were there, they did. But we were on the front row. In a tiny little site. Couldn't even hardly park the TV on it. But last year at PL. We could stay hooked up to the TT, And still park 3 vehicles side by side on our site. And have a picnic shelter.
Also You can reserve specific sites. Our site for July is 790. 48' X 33'. We are thinking of putting up a volley ball net. :B
OL is good. If we had too we would stay there. Its just not our first choice.
