Best place to stay near Mount Rushmore

Planning a trip after the 4th of July to Mount Rushmore. What is your favorite place to stay, and what should we do in and around the Mount Rushmore area?

  • Wherever you decide to stay pay attention to the campgrounds directions on how to get there. There are several roads in the area you can not travel on in an RV or when pulling a trailer.
  • Rafter Bar J for sure! The KOA is nice, but overrun by kids and noise. Not relaxing.
  • We did the KOA in Rapid City, although if we go back I think we'd do the Gulch. The good thing about the KOA is that it's close to stores, restaurants etc. After 2 weeks in North Dakota, we were ready for some civilization.
  • Rafter Bar J. Island has huge spots. Park is close to everything.....Dennis

Wind Cave NP is easier to get a site if you get there before the weekend. From there you can drive through Custer SP, Mt Rushmore and visit Wind Cave right at the CG.

    Simple Look Here
  • Custer State Park, Game Lodge Campground - great views of Mt. Rushmore through the tunnels on Iron Mountain Road (16A) just a short distance from campground as well as the wildlife loop less than a mile away. 50 amp electric only but water and dump available in campground.
