This could happen to you if you take the wrong road!!! - Golden_HVACExplorerHighway 16 or 16A has four tunnels that are lined up directly with the monument, and always attract a huge crowd at tunnel #1 and #4 (the first one from the other direction). Stop at 2 or 3, they all have similar views, but not in a huge motorhome. I was in my car. There are bypass roads. I was following a very slow car up the hill, after the nighttime fireworks, going back to Custer State Park, and took the bypass in my Honda CRV, passing the slow car.
From the parking lot, top level, you can find the tunnels. I knew about where they where, and a straight line of 'missing' trees, lead to the tunnels, as the sun was coming up on the other side of the mountain in the morning. .
When leaving the parking area, if in a car, go to the right about 1/4 mile, you can park a few minutes in the tiny lot, and get a side shot of Washington!
Have fun camping!

You really do want to watch the roads this picture was taken on the Needles Highway between Mt RUSHMORE and CRAZY HORSE MONUMENT. You can see it is close to our jeep. - tropical36ExplorerDon't know what's going on with my second page here, but there are no tabs for editing, quoting etc....
Anyway, I was trying to post a link to some of the tunnel pics in Custer SP and couldn't name the link either, so here goes again.
Clickit - desobelmanExplorerI suggest you stay at a nearby RV park and drive your towed car to and from Mt. Rushmore. We stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch in Hill City and visited Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Ellsworth Air Base just outside of Rapid City.
There are several other RV parks in the vicinity.
Happy Trails! ;) - tropical36Explorer

Well, the 'one' is NOT hiway 40 from Hermosa to Keystone, nor is it the Keystone-Hill city hiway, nor is it 244 that comes up the mountain from behind Rushmore. Is that three? There is a large tunnel on 16A coming into Keystone from the north, but that is not a problem because there is a by-pass on the right that is directly beside the tunnel
This thing with the tunnels, sounds like the wildlife drive in Custer State Park, maybe and a little ways to the south of these monuments.
Custer SP - Sully2ExplorerLook the park up on the internet and call them on the phone!

- Dick_BExplorerTake the bus tour and avoid the problem. Leave the driving and the commentary to the guides and throw in Crazy Horse.
- J-RoosterExplorerYes, and when you leave Rushmore go to the Crazyhorse Mounument up the road about 20 minutes.
