I think the best and cheapest way is to buy a portable dvd player for $50 or so. The battery in it can be recharged. If you are gonna try to recharge your batteries by jumper cable from the truck, then just plug it into the cigarette lighter of the truck while you are doing that and let it charge. Or if you go driving, you can do the same thing.
A 16GB Ipad will not hold very many movies. You will also need to make sure that the ipads wifi and bluetooth are shut off to conserve energy on it. They will contniuosly search for connections and wear your battery down fast. If you are thinking of an ipad with more memory, you are gonna pay good for it.
Some libraries had dvd's that you can check out. So that may be an option for you to have an assortment and not have to pay for them. They won't be new stuff, but maybe something entertaining.
