I'm sure that works fine. That's how my setup works. My usb-connected hard drive feeds the WD Live converter. The converter converts the movie format into streaming video.
USB bandwidth is about 220 M bit/s
HD TV bandwidth is about 1 G bit/s
It's impossible to stream HD video using usb.

With this setup he can just plug USB appliances into one of it's USB connectors on the side and, with the appropriate software in the computer - run whatever is connected to the USB port - just like with a laptop. I assume that he could do this using a large USB-powered hard drive loaded with movies and then play the movies, too ... I'll check with him on this.
