Big Meadows is a great camping spot.... We have gone the many times sometimes just to drive up there and watch the groups of deer cross the main road at dusk. There is a picnic grounds just west of the camp ground with nice tables and back into the woods abit.
They have a shower building and real nice snack bar and camping supplies at the main entrance on Skyline Drive...
Our favorite spot on SKYLINE DRIVE is the LOFT MTN camp site. It is not as crowded as you are going to find out for BIG MEADOWS especially in OCTOBER. Hope you have reservations. If they are full up check with LOFT MOUNTAIN. When you drive into the main entrances to SKYLINE DRIVE they have signs up for capacity of the three main camp grounds.
Another great campground not too far from there is SHERANDO LAKES. It is just off the BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY that starts up at the south end of SKYLINE DRIVE...
We actually find better FALL LEAVES Southwest of Harrisonburg VA up on the VA/WVA wooded state line. The forest service roads in that area have some outstanding photo ops places for the falls leaves. They also have a NO HOOKUP campground locally as well - I can't remember the name of it...
We go up to a place near FLAGPOLE RIDGE with my OFF-ROAD POPUP CAMPER. Great spot with a tremendous view of several mtn ridges off in the distance. You are all by your self up there unless the local JEEP CLUBS have a get-to-gether at the main part of FLAGPOLE RIDGE. Nice photos on GOOGLE SEARCH for this place.
Regarding the tunnels on SKYLINE DRIVE is they are short and you need to go thru the middle of it which has the highest points. The speed limit is low so folks coming the other way will see you and let you come on through using the middle of the road.
