First, it's Monticello, Utah, not Colorado. :)
We've stayed at Bradfield campground about a mile off 491 just before Cortez, CO. It gets very little use. Nearby is also Cabin Canyon campground. Both are below the dam of McPhee Reservoir. Here's a link and note there's a place to click for the campground map directions:

If you're taking 491 from Cortez south into New Mexico you'll be traveling on Navajo Reservation land just about all the way to Bernardo. There won't be many camping options along the way so it's best to stop around Cortez for the night.
