Bristol, TN campgrounds, Aug race

If this has been brought up before, forgive me. What are the recommended campgrounds for those that have stayed there for this race? Don't need the full blown party atmosphere and okay with walking 1/2-1 mile to/from track. Only staying for 3 nights.

  • Shadrack campground has full hookups and they are just up the street, about 8/10ths of a mile, from the track. Pretty sure you could walk it but there are shuttles everywhere on race days. I'd call them early as possible though. You may have to pay for the whole week but its worth it IMO to have sewer hookup. There are several places to camp around the track that don't offer any hook ups at all... If you don't mind dry camping. I'd rather pay more for a level spot with full amenities, but that's just me. There are also a couple of places directly across the street from the track but I'm not sure of the name. You might call the track and see if they know who owns them. Lakeview RV Park is a bit further from the track but still on hwy 11E ( the same road the track is on). They probably offer shuttle service to the track too. And as Dennis said, The dragstrip campground is right there on the grounds.

The spring race has been moved to April 19th. You should come to it too! :)
  • Milhorn Campground on Old Thomas Bridge Rd. 5 minute walk to track. Has water but no electric or sewer,Been staying there for 14 years, works for me !
  • You can find info and a campground map here. Click on the map to enlarge.

Best bet is one of the Speedway campgrounds. We started out dry camping on the grounds 20+ years ago (area no longer exists) and finished up the last 8 or ten years in the Dragstrip Campground. We had full hook-up spaces above the dragstrip. Last race we went to was Aug 2011.

Many places will require a minimum stay. All of the Speedway campgrounds as well as All American, Red Barn, and Earhart have walkable connections to the track without crossing main roads, but those three can get a bit rowdy.

A few of the church operated campgrounds do not allow alcohol, good or bad depending. There are buses running to the remote parking lots and many of the off site campgrounds.

Almost anywhere you will be walking a mile or more unless you ride a shuttle bus.
Have fun! The August race is a real happening!
