Buccaneer State Park

Thinking about hitting Buccaneer State Park, MS some where around the week or so in April. Would you recommend reservations? RV Reviews make it sound like a pretty nice park. Would this park be OK for a couple of days for an on the go, aging, couple who like to view the sites, see new things and try new food? You know, walk on the beach, BBQ, have an adult beverage, or two, relax and see new sites. 2.) Whats the grocery shopping in the area like, and or how far away is it? 3.) Seafood markets and fresh catch nearby? 4.) Restaurants nearby, prefer no chain eateries?

thanks

I wonder if that will change when the new store opens in the Spring?
  • Ditto what everyone said; the sites towards the front of the park are nice but not a lot of shade, the section in the nw rear corner has plenty trees, and is like a real ms. campground, but you are closer to the RR tracks, usually about 6 trains per day or more but not really bad; everything there is new
  • You will not need a reservation in April unless you want a specific site. It is a very large park.
  • The Knock Knock Bar has the best fried oysters and shrimp. Adult beverages and great eats in one place. Located on 90. If you do not like to eat in a bar they also have a just food side. I think it is called Tony's. Froogles grocery store down by the Gulfport bridge has some great prices! Also bags of firewood for $3 dollars. We love the park and like staying in the back loop.
  • I was there for a couple months not long ago.

yloshrk covered everything pretty well. You did mention walking on the beach. There are many miles of beach walking/biking path but it starts about a mile from the park entrance. Lots of places to park if you want to drive but I usually walked to the beginning of beach path.

Also, the Silver Slipper Casino is nearby. Even if you aren't into gambling they have a great buffet. Sometimes they run a shuttle bus from the park.
  • Yes, yes, yes. Grocery shopping in Bay St. Louis, about 20 minutes (at 25mph speed limit). Claiborne Hill Supermarket has very nice produce and meat with a butcher. Your standard discount joints and a wally world are also available. !/4 mile to the west is Lakeshore road. About a mile north on that from the beach is a convenience store with propane and deli, and a liquor store. Also along the road are several dockside fresh seafood joints that sell shrimp and crabs.
When you travel east along the beach, there are several little seafood restaurants. Google the "Blind Tiger."
The one thing I disliked is that this is the only Ms. state park I have ever been to that didn't sell firewood on site. Fires are allowed, but it is bring or find your own.
April should be a good month as far as bugs. Farther into summer the no seeums appear and based on your level of tolerance can be a pain.
    Have fun.
If you are in a travel trailer or fifth wheel 129 is an awesome sight.
Bigger equipment would be better off up front.
Oh, I love trains so this bothered me not one bit, but you will hear the mournful wail of train horns about 10 times a day.
