The people trapped last year were at Mammoth Pool reservoir during the creek fire which started north of Shaver Lake along "big creek" road. They only had one way out and were cut off by the fire. The tree mortality problem due to bark beetles the last several years really made that fire bad up to about the 7000 foot elevation.
Camp Edison is just up the road from Shaver Lake town on Highway 168. Been going there since the seventies nearly every year. That is a gem of a campground with power to every site and marina access to the lake. Like everything the prices keep going up, but it sure beats the lack of amenities at many of our state campgrounds. Just looking at the picnic tables at some our state campgrounds gets my blood boilin!
Funny thing about the latest closures: Went to Castaic lake yesterday boating and fishing which was open but Pyramid Lake just up the 5 is closed because its in Forestry land though the fire danger would be equal. Kinda hard to start a brush fire on the lake. Feel sorry for all the families canceling their trips this weekend.
