Gulf shores (where?). We usually just overnight in a Walmart headed south. When we drive further down in Florida, I usually make it into Georgia somewhere. This is only a short 900 ish miles to the panhandle.

We normally go out West for a while then come back across the gulf. Gulf shores is just east of mobile bay in Alabama.
If you go down 95 in Ga there is a small campground in Townsend on a small lake there

You can go to Jeckl island state park really interesting.

From Westland..... a long, long way LOL Check out Gulf shores we normally stop there on our way to Fl.

I can give you a spot to avoid, especially for light sleepers: Navarre Beach. It's the home of the Air Force's weapons testing department at Eglin AFB - we were treated to 2 nights of "nighttime helicopter warfare" that sounded like it was happening about 2 blocks away. It went on from about 1 AM to 6 AM, and the explosions/machine-gun fire was scary even when you know it's only practice. I can't even imagine how upsetting it would be for a Vet suffering PTSD. The locals don't even seem to notice it, so I guess you learn to tune it out? They said it happens a couple times each month, and we were lucky enough to be there to experience it.

A nice little park that's oceanfront, in the middle of nowhere, is HoHum RV Park in Carabelle.

We're trying Rocky Bayou State Park in March of 2016. I don't know much about the panhandle, but we've liked the other Florida State Park campgrounds.

It's a little east of Milton but we have always enjoyed our stays at Blackwater River State Park. You can float down the river if you like and many of the sites have been upgraded to 50 amp FHU.

Going further west Grayton Bch SP and Henderson Bch SP. Less appealling in the winter but nice places.
