Everyone seems to point to Cherry Hill, but another VERY nice campground with easy access to the Metro is Fairfax County Park Campground. Click here. This is really a nice park, has lots to offer and even has the water park where you and the kids can spend a day easily.
This one is well worth considering.
There are a few others including ,Bull Run, Po hick Bay, Little Bennet. and Prince William Forest.
These are all decent spots that are generally cheaper than Cherry Hill. However none of them cater to tourist in the way Cherry Hill does. There is a Metro Bus stop in the CG. There are 2 subway stations close by. The staff is geared towards tourist.
If you want to work at it a bit the other CG's are worthwhile.
But they are not quite set up for the tourist crowd like Cherry Hill.
Cherry Hill is highly recommended as a base camp for touring DC for a reason. Catering to DC tourist is what they do!
