CampGulf/ Topsail?

Just got back from first visit to Camp Gulf. Not what we expected for the price. Not well maintained, crowded, pools dirty, etc. Also, we stayed across from the basketball court and playground. Thump, thump all week long. Nice beach, water and friendly staff. Went down the road and toured Topsail. More our speed but a few questions. We know about the tram ride every hour to the beach. Ok, how do you get your luggage (chairs, umbrella, ice chest, etc) to the beach and back? Are there clean bathrooms at the beach? If anyone used this tram please give us the pros and cons. Thanks!

It's actually the same thing. When I saw what you posted, I was thinking maybe 2 different parks. But if you google both names, you come up with the same website campgulf.com and they call it Camp Gulf on their website.

For those who wants the sand between their toes the minute they step out their RV, then Camp Gulf is good for that. If you are looking for a little space and/or don't want to pay over $100/night, then it's not the place. We have no issues spending that amount, if the location and amenities warrant it. Options also come into play. When you can go somewhere like Topsail (which is further away from the hustle and bustle), offers the same amenities basically (except for closeness to the beach and water), and for less than half the price, then that would be where we would pick. But that's just us. But on the other hand, we will pick a place like Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach over the state park there. But I will say there's a bit of difference between the appearance and amenities. But it's what we like while there.

  • As far as Topsail goes.... you take your stuff and put it on the tram. The tram is pulled by a truck, so I am sure the driver would allow you to put your stuff in the back of the truck if needed. We bought a bike trailer (one for kids) at Walmart and attached it to our bikes and put our stuff in it and just rode our bikes down to the beach.Yuo can also rent them while there. Don't plan on carrying a large ice chest. But I have seen people rigging up the ice chests with wheels to be towed behind their bike. I don't think you will want to lug a big one across the sand anyway. Also, when you get to the end of the tram trail, you will have to use the wionding boardwalk to get out to the beach. It goes across the dunes.

And yes, there are clean bathrooms at the beach.

Topsail is our favorite of all the campgrounds/parks in that area.
  • There are 4 state parks with beach camping in that general area that would all be better than Camp Gulf IMO.
  • We just went from top sail to gulf shore. Which one is better depends what your looking for. Do you want quiet, sea food, scenery or a beach that is close. We will go to buccaneer state park next week so we can it the casino next door.

Although the dog can't go on the beach the tram at top sail let him take a ride with us.
  • We enjoyed Henderson Beach State Park more than Topsail. From Henderson, it's just a short walk across the boardwalk to get to the sand...and I agree, Camp Gulf is over rated, but lots do love it...different strokes.....Dennis
  • The water is clearer at Topsail, but we like Gulf Shores more and is one of our favorite parks.
  • Pros:
    • The tram runs about every hour and does not take long to get to the beach.

    Cons:
    • You have to cart all your stuff with you on the tram which can be a hassle.
    • The tram can be crowded, especially in the summer so you may have to wait until it makes a round trip.
    • Parking where the tram starts can be a pain especially in summer months.
    • Once you get to the beach you need to lug all your stuff over a good sized boardwalk to get to the sand.

Topsail is a great place though. You might want to consider also going to Gulf State Park near Gulf Shores Alabama. It has everything that Topsail has but you can drive right to the beach and there is a brand new huge pool. All the sites are FHU.

If you click on my signature photolink I have an album of pictures for each of these places.
