camping around Aiken County, SC

Hello,

On our return trip home this April, the wife and I are thinking about looking around in Aiken County for a possible permanent relocation. Can anyone recommend a campground that would be open in April such that we can spend some time researching the area?

thanks,

  • Nice state Park there. Aiken State Park. Most parks are open year round down here.
  • That might not be a good idea unless you plan to go to the area very early or late in the month. Across the river in Augusta, GA the Masters is introducing a new women's tournament beginning April 6 and immediately following will be the practice rounds and the tournament itself through April 14. We know from experience that hotels in Aiken and beyond fill up, not sure about state parks and nicer RV Pars.

btw, I don't think Aiken State Park is full service. In SC only a few have sewer hook ups.

X2^^!!. We lived in the Augusta and Aiken County area for 26 years and Masters' week is when sane people get the heck out of town. Everything within 75 miles will be booked solid. We're in the area right now for medical and dental appointments and have been told we'll have to leave before the Masters'.

On another note, one of the reasons we left Aiken County was the taxes. Housing and other costs are reasonable, but property and vehicle taxes will eat your lunch. Check out Kiplinger's tax map and info for retirees.

Interesting, In looking at several states with supposedly lower taxes than SC, for example, Louisiana, which is listed as deep blue on the map, has slightly lower property taxes, but higher sales taxes and they tax food. All the other taxes are similar within a point or two. So, which golden state has much better taxes for home owners? I'm curious, a good number of my buyers move to SC because of our tax structure.

In reading more closely the folks at Kiplingers has their thumb lighter on the scale for states that give preference to high wage earners. They don't seem to be overly concerned about the day to day taxes on foods and clothing. Kind of odd since it is a map for retirees and I suppose the retirees Kiplingers is interested in are more of the higher income bracket than I was.

If you use Kiplingers, take note of the details, they do not emphasize sales and other regressive taxes we all pay and take a bigger chunk out of a fixed income pocket.
