Being a life-long Long Islander and now a Pennsylvania resident I feel your pain. The roads on Long Island, NYC, and some of NJ are an embarrassment and it blows my mind that considering the tax dollars paid to these states that this occurs. Every time we travel there in our motor home drawers open spilling contents, whatever is not secured becomes a projectile, and when you open the cabinets upon arriving at your destination, you have to stand back lest you are in for a concussion. We still enjoy visiting campgrounds and have relatives and friends living there so we make the trip, but find that our visits are less frequent only because of the road conditions. Sorry for the rant but we just returned from a trip there yesterday and I'm still seething about the horrible road conditions...As far as campgrounds in PA we like Twin Grove and Spring Gulch - enjoy your camping in PA, it's a beautiful state with plenty to see!
