Camping on Texas coast around Christmas? Need suggestions...

We're planning an unconventional Christmas by taking advantage of work/school closures and going campin'. We want to stay in Big Bend NP over Christmas and then drive out to the coast somewhere in the vicinity of Corpus Christie/Padre Island. Any suggestions for parks/sites? What's the weather/scene like on the coast that time of year? We're about 6 months out and I want to make reservations now. Thanks a bunch!

  • All of the above and don't forget Galveston Island. Even though we were there after the big hurricane, we stayed at a private park. We had a great time but it was colder than heck. We love Texas coast. Have fun!
  • Another good one is LCRA Matagorda Rv park. You have the Colorado River behind your campsite & Gulf of Mexico just a walk away. It has FHU and very clean park. It is a little over 100 miles give or take from Rockport. The website shows what each site looks like. Goose Island is another one we really like too.

  • Was just looking at Malaquite campground at the Padre Island National seashore park, south of Bob Hall Pier. Check that one out.

Weather down at the coast in December and January: you could see some cold spells if a real cold norther blows down from Canada, but it will be short lived.
  • My two favorites are Mustang Island and Goose Island State Parks... Just got back from Goose Island last week...
