Camping on the beach in southern CA

Where in southern CA can you camp in an RV right on the beach (i.e., on the sand?)
  • Not ON the beach but VERY close is Jalama Beach County Park. Take a look on Google Maps satellite view.
  • Lived in California for 55 years.
Pismo/Oceano is the ONLY place in California that I know you can camp a RV ON the sand.

All the other places mentioned are NEXT to the sand, not ON it.

It ain't like Texas wher there's lots of places to camp a RV on the beach sand.
  • Pismo Beach (Oceano) camping - no reservations, and no problem getting in. Once on 4th of July weekend they had to stop taking people because it got that crowded.

Area is called Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. Pismo.

Reserveamerica right now shows tomorrow and Tuesday as walkup because you must reserve at least two days ahead. The rest of the week shows 900+ sites available each day until you get to the weekend when it shows 1. Confusing or else they really get a LOT of weekend folks.

If you go (I have done it), watch tides very carefully, take $$$$ for a tow if needed, and hit a carwash on the way out to wash your rig top to bottom including underneath.
  • Is beach camping by reservation only? Can't find info on Reserve America. Photos on google look like everybody's camped helter-skelter all over the place. If I drive up there tomorrow (Monday Feb 8) will I find a spot?
  • Bolsa Chica State Beach. You're in a parking lot right next to the sand.
(It is very popular, so you need to make reservations 6 months out.)
  • Camp Pendleton Marine Base, Oceanside. There was at least a foot of sand under the tires. Not exactly out on the beach like Pismo but as close as you'll get in SoCal.
  • Pismo is the place to get on the sand, as sch911 said, watch all the videos, Been there done that many, many times.

A little hint,as you go in you will see tow trucks, they will come get you if stuck, very very expensive if needed, but you can pay them to get you and in any place you want, and out at a much lower price,it is all about negotiation, also been there done that :B
