Regarding the quote above, are you saying we should spend the 4 days near Rt28? To clarify, we are arriving in the area on Friday and then the following Tuesday we have a 2pm Ferry over to the Vineyard. If we turned right on 28 as you say there is cape cod camp resort and a few others in that area. Are they nice? Worth staying a few days? We were leaning more towards Atlantic Oaks or others out that way. We were even talking about one of the campgrounds all the way out like Dunes Edge or Costal acres, but I feel like we are asking for trouble with the traffic.Thoughts?
Thanks everyone. Getting excited for the trip.
Once again, I'm on the Cape all year and have been for 19 years. I live on the Canal and commute regularly to Chatham, not far from Atlantic Oaks. I have nothing against Atlantic Oaks, in fact I know the owners and they're great people. You are driving from PA and expecting to get to Eastham all in the same day, on a Friday, in July. I won't say it's impossible, but you will be setting up at Atlantic Oaks in the dark and at the end of your rope, no matter what time you leave.
I would do 2 days at Normandy which is an hour closer to your departure and 2 days at Cape Camp Resort. This has you coming onto the Cape on Sunday when everyone is going the other way. The drive from Cape Camp Resort to Woods Hole is about 20 minutes. It's an hour from Atlantic Oaks and more from the tip of the Cape.
And here's the biggest issue. In the summer, you cannot count on travel times. Traffic backs up at odd times for no reason. You have a reservation on a particular ferry trip. You need to be somewhere at a certain time. If you miss the ferry, you'll go on standby for the next ferry. There are probably campers in the standby lot right now from last weekend. I'd rather be 20 minutes away than an hour+.
