Carlsbad & Fort Davis ?

Going to go to see the Caverns again and then swing down to Fort Davis and go to the observatory.
The state park at Fort Davis is fine but would like recommendations for other places to sty at both locations please.
  • Just an FYI, at last check the elevators are still shut down at Carlsbad Caverns. Have to walk in and out.
  • Here's Carlsbad's web site with lots of good information:

    http://www.nps.gov/cave/index.htm

We stay at Brantley Lake State Park

For Fort Davis, the state park is the best place to stay or a longer drive would be Balmorhea State Park just off I-10.
  • An extraordinary boondock spot is on the se side of nm 720 at the Black River crossing between us 285 & us 62 just a bit away from Carlsbad Caverns.
Its BLM land, dam, pond and all. We enjoyed the fishing and privacy.
  • We've always liked the Dog Canyon campground in Guadalupe Mountain NP. The CG itself isn't anything special; the four or so RV sites are pick your spot on a gravel lot but the setting is awesome and you'll likely have the place to yourself other than maybe a couple of tenters.

If you should end up in the area, be sure to visit Sitting Bull Falls in Lincoln NF and watch out for deer and cattle in the road.

Brantley Lake SP is another campground in the area with a few more amenities.
  • Warning - Biased opinion

In a little over two months while volunteering at Davis Mountains State Park, I looked at all the other RV 'parks' in Fort Davis. I wouldn't waste my money on any of them. I said it was a biased opinion.

If I couldn't get into Davis Mountains SP, I'd go to Lost Alaskan RV in Alpine. I would spend my money to stay there.

Carlsbad - as an Escapee - I stay at The Ranch, but Brantley Lake State Park would be fine. Dog Canyon is on my to do list, but I wouldn't use it as a base to see the caverns.

I haven't been impressed with any of the RV parks in Carlsbad, but the KOA near the state park isn't too bad, just expensive.

It really comes down to how much driving you want to do.

White's City RV Park is overpriced and in the middle of one of the few "Great American Tourist Traps" left in this country. But you cannot beat the location for seeing the caverns.
