Carlsbad is still an active formation cave. Now nearby (to Kartchner)Colossal Cave is a dead/dry as a bone cave. I went to Kartchner for the first time this spring. I took both tours with the same guide. I've worked in Carlsbad as a volunteer. I would always recommend C-bad over Kartchner. Heck I would recommend Caverns of Sonora over Kartchner.
Maybe I'm jaded :) I've seen off-trail areas of Carlsbad that just had my jaw on the floor.
I stayed at Kartchner's CG and went over when the doors opened to buy tickets for both tours.
