CG & thgs to see/do nr columbia, Charleston. and Savanna SC

We will be traveling through these cities in early November. Most likely we will only stay 2-3 days in each location. Can you recommend some campgrounds and places to see, things to do etc. in each?
  • For Charleston we have stayed at James island county park. Obviously I don’t know what your interested in but I enjoyed Charles towne landing, (palmetto island?). You can go to the old slave market downtown. There really is to much to do to list here. I generally don’t enjoy going near a big city for vacation but this is one exception.

I second the Tybee Island, and there is a Fort near there, just don’t think it’s Jackson. I suppose there could be two of them....

There is an old Fort Jackson as well as Fort Pulaski farther east just before you get to Tybee. Both on the Savannah River. Tours are available at both I believe.
  • The only Fort Jackson I know of is an active army base in Columbia, and definitely not a tourist stop. Now Fort Sumter is one of many things to do in Charleston SC, along with Patriots Point with a WWII aircraft carrier, planes, a submarine, and a destroyer. You can do a lot of walking in Charleston through the old market, along the waterfront, and get some really good local cuisine. I think the place you want to try to get into is John Island County Park. (If I got the name right). A very nice place to stay and even has a shuttle to downtown Charleston.

Columbia doesn’t have a wealth of campgrounds, and quite frankly other than the State Museum and Confedreate Relic room, not sure what there really is to do, unless you can catch a USC football game ... There is a nice state park near Fort Jackson (fairly central) called Sesquicentennial Sate Park. Good place to stay for a night anyway. There are also two state parks on lakes but they are both 20-25 miles from Columbia in opposite directions. One it Lake Wateree State Park which I really like, the other is Dreher Island State Park on Lake Murray.

  • Have not stayed there but several friends suggested we try Skidaway State park on our next Savannah trip.
    As to what to do,
A day over at Tybee Island.
Fort Jackson is a restored civil war fort east of Savannah right on the river.
There are numerous tours, many related to ghost and vampires.
The Cemetery there is fascinating, huge old oaks full of spanish moss, and the gravestones tell many stories, how people died, you can see the years of plague events, yellow fever and influenza.
