cheap seats for Durango

We're retired and will be on a road trip in September. From Pennsylvania we are going to Yellowstone, flaming gorge and hopefully Durango, Co., before ending in Sante Fe. Because of our restricted budget we would like a two day layover so we can walk through town and take a ride on the Silverton Railroad. The CG run around 50 a night. Is there any other alternative, County, State or other?
  • I noted a comment here about riding the train only one way and returning by bus. I would disagree with this idea. If this is the only time you might do this, it is well worth it to ride the train both ways. You get a totally different perspective on the return trip. Unless things have changed, you have an assigned seat and you will view everything from the other side of the train on the return trip. Also, you will return in the afternoon which gives everything different lighting. I've ridden the train both up and down and have done it in one of the "open" cars. The only thing I'd change if I am blessed to ride it again is changing my assigned seat to the other side of the car. I was on the left side on my first trip and would want to be on the right side on a second trip. Just an old man's 2-cents. Have a great trip and,

    Happy Camping!
  • There are many opinions about the train/bus combinations Durango to Silveton. I think that the best combination is to take the train up in the morning when you and your family are fresh. I think these are the best views--Durango to Silverton. Then take the bus back for a more relaxing ride in the afternoon.

We have made the trip several times--both ways on the train and the combination above.

Once we got off the train at Needle Creek to begin a backpack into the Wemenuche Wilderness. I guess that was the best way to "get back" of all.
  • We did the train to Silverton and the bus back. When we got back I wished I had taken the train both ways. But then I've yet to do it again so I can't really say which is better.
