Chincoteague island campgrounds

I am planning a trip to Chincoteague this summer with my family, my trailer is 37' slide outs on both sides, my parents will be coming too in a 30' trailer.

We are looking at either Toms Cove CG, or Maddox Family CG.

For those who have gone, is one better then the other?

Thank you.
  • We have stayed at both. We like Maddox because its easier to ride your bike out onto island. Overall nicer CG. If your going for the pony swim I think Tom's is better, never been there for that so not sure.
  • We stayed at Maddox twice.Nice sites under tall pine trees. They have a pool and store.Maddox is the closest to Assateague National Wildlife refuge. They have some nice beaches and paved bike trails.
  • We like Tom's Cove. It is right on the water and the Light House makes a beautiful backdrop. They also have a pool and a store along with 3 fishing piers.
  • Stayed at Tom's Cove for the pony swim. Before the swim, we took our chairs and set them up on the street where they parade the ponies. Went back and got a spot on the dock and watched them swim the ponies over. Then went back out to watch the parade.
  • The seasonal creep at Maddox has been like a glacier. Can't blame the owners, steady money wins every time, but fewer and fewer "camp" sites left.
I would caution that the lovely pines are everywhere and can be in the wrong place for slide use in many of the sites.

Thanks for the heads up, with a 37' trailer with 4 slides it could be a issue. The only thing I'm unsure of at Toms is you have to mail your reservations in and no sure thing you'll get what you wanted....

I'll be booking something in the next couple days

Good luck with that. Because Tom's is so popular for the pony penning week, they open reservations for the season on January first and they check the post marks for the priority. You might get lucky.
  • I will be coming after pony penning, so I hope that works in my favor. Still not a fan of not knowing if I'll get full hookups or not
