Christmas stuff in Texas

Hello, looking for a campground to visit over the thanksgiving break that would be close to some Christmas activities. Any suggestions? would prefer to stay at a state park but not a must...
  • I can't speak to the Christmas aspect, but Jefferson is a very nifty place to visit. Be advised that town businesses are closed Sundays. And nearby, Caddo Lake is beautiful with all the Spanish moss and cypress trees.

Natchitoches is very cool too. Be sure to try one of their famed "meat pies." Neat architecture. A bit touristy but any more, what isn't?

If you want to catch a train ride, you could do the TSR. They have something called the Polar Express. And, there's camping.

While you're near Palestine you might like to check out one of the coolest cemetery statues ever.

I will agree that Thanksgiving might be just a bit early, but I will mention three good possibilities:

1> Agree about Jefferson. There are good campground on Lake 'o The Pines, COE, Brushy Creek and Buckhorn on each side of the dam. Not far to Jefferson.

2> Marshall, Texas has some great Christmas lighting that you can drive through, especially note the Old Courthouse. Same camping would work for Marshall.

3> San Antonio on the Riverwalk. Beautiful barges and unique Christmas music with a Mexican flavor.

You can get dates and other information online, Just Google.

Just noticed that OP is from Houston. I will add Nachitoches, LA to my list.
I will second Natchitoches, La. The Christmas lighting there is wonderful. Only one campground that I know of there and it is very small.
  • As mentioned above, the San Antonio River Walk is beautifully decorated during the Christmas Holidays. Another beautiful spot is Santa's Wonderland in College Station, TX.
  • Clarks Gardens in Mineral Wells does Christmas. Just down the street from Lake Mineral Wells State Park. Look on the TPWD website for state parks having Christmas events. We always camp from Halloween until New Years in our state & COE parks.

  • Texans do a lot of family camping over Thanksgiving week and also over Xmas and N ew Years.
Also around Dec 1st a lot of towns have liighting programs with lots os activity.
  • We stayed at Cedar Ridge COE CG on Lake Belton last year for Thanksgiving and my daughter found a Christmas light display online..I forget exactly where it was but I'm thinking it was on military grounds??? It was about a 5 mile tour & was $7.00 per vehicle.

Talked to my DD & she said it was called BLORA & it was on part of Ft. Hood. Do a search for BLORA or Ft. Hood DFMWR & you find it. There was a long line getting to gate to pay, but very nice after that. We listened to Christmas music while we crept along!
  • Thanksgiving may be early, but Jefferson TX has Christmas events starting about the first part of Dec.
  • Ummmm....TEXAS is a BIG State...are you thinking anywhere in particular. We liked Buckhorn Lake RV Resort near Kerrville. Lots to do in that area...Dennis
