Crater of diamonds campground question

Can you walk from the Arkansas State Park Campround at Crater of Diamonds to the diamond hunting fields? We will be traveling thru the area in a few weeks by motorhome but without our TOAD.

I just camped at the Crater of Diamonds State Park campground, and it is one of the nicest campgrounds in the US. The sites are spaced out, with trees for shade and privacy, and everything is very clean and quiet.

And yes, you can walk from the campgrounds to the Crater of Diamonds field.

You can see the video I created while I was there at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLANgfuLBt8

  • It's been several years since I was there, but I walked from the campsite to the diamond fields. At that time you had to go in the office to pay the fee and rent the equipment (if you need to rent any.) Also, there was a film you could watch first. Hint... wear OLD shoes. Mine went in the trash afterward.
Also, I read after I was there, to dig around any pipes where the water seems to come out of. Seems that is where the diamonds wash out of. I didn't find anything, but it was fun to do anyway.
  • As you read, the answer is yes. CofD State Park was one of the nicer parks we stayed in over all of our travels, and I understand it's been upgraded since we were there (2006). Agree with reply to your post about old shoes, and I would extend that to say "old clothes." The soil there will stain, particularly any white or light colors, if you get it on your clothing. We found no diamonds on our trip, hence I am still working..........
  • Thanks for the speedy replies. We usually always tow but this trip we pulled a U Haul trailer to New Mexico. On the way home to Myrtle Beach we want to meander around a bit, any suggestions are appreciated.
  • I would suggest Lake Catherine State Park. It is not too far from the Crater of Diamonds. A beautiful park and has some FHU sites. Close to Hot Springs. Try it, I think you will like it.
