Crystal Beach TX

Continuing our first winter on the road. We had planned to make it to the RGV, but we have a hard date to hit KC in April to visit the DD. Plus the prospect of South Padre Island during spring break did not sound like a great idea, so we altered plans a little and went as far as the Bolivar Peninsula/Crystal Beach/Port Bolivar. Now we're headed back north.

It was a fairly easy ride from Breaux Bridge LA down I-10 to Texas 124 and 87. Roads to the Bolivar are straight and well paved. This is also the most likely route to Galveston from the east. The Bolivar-Galveston ferry runs all the time and is free.

This is off season in Crystal Beach so the parks were all dead. There are at least 5 parks to choose from and we picked the one that had the best reviews on rvparkreviews.com - Beachside RV Park.

It's a small park, no frills and not on the beach, but off season rates are $150/week. No cable but Houston OTA stations came in fine. While we were there they upgraded the park WiFI and it was blazingly fast. The park is well maintained and the operator - Larry - is a good ol' boy type, always ready to lend a hand. He's not on site, but he always answered the phone.

There really isn't much to do off season here, which was ok with us. There's a convenience store and a dive bar within walking distance and the beach is about 1/4 away. I guess I'm spoiled by Atlantic waters. I have a hard time enjoying brown seawater.

This would be a good weekend spot on season, but it's small (40 sites) and there re a half-dozen resident trailers. If you're headed here for a summer weekend, you'd probably better call ahead.

We recently dry camped 5 days at Rollover Pass, paid $10 daily fee to do so, a privately owned part of the town of Crystal Beach for the surf and pass fishing and to support the private ownership association efforts to keep the pass open against state efforts to fill it in. Much can be learned by visiting the Crystal Beach website.
We did see several off beach rv parks nearby that offered quite reasonable rates, from daily to seasonal. None we saw were beach frontage.
Hurricane risks are very high, beach frontage land cost prohibitave for an RV park in such a location with so few attractions.
    we'll go again!

I wondered if you made it
Yes, and thank you for the tip. Keith, pass manager for the sportsmens owners assocation (& 'rollover Rick') made our stay memorable.

  • We enjoyed our stay in the area too. You are absolutely right about the water at the beach, its disgustingly dirty. No way would I let kids swim in it. There is not much to do in the immediate area so that means its quiet. Its an easy drive to Galveston if you want some excitement. We stayed at the Bolivar Peninsula RV park. I would go back there.
